10/15/17 Barre Blast

Dear Ruggles Family,

We are excited to let you know that our WINN program, established during the 2014-2015 school year, has begun! The WINN block, which stands for What I Need Now, is a 30 minute, daily block during which all students K-6 are working in small groups based on individual needs. Some students are working on reinforcing skills, others are practicing new skills while others are working to extend new skills. Groups are flexible depending on each child’s need at that time in the school year.

To make this happen, additional adults are assigned to the grade level to decrease the size of groups during this time. The staff available during this time may include: Intervention Specialist (1), Intervention Tutors (2), Special Education Teacher (1), Paraprofessionals (3). In addition to our grade-level teachers, this additional support allows us to provide children with meaningful reinforcement and extension during this daily block.

For example, 6th grade has their intervention block from 8:35-9:05 each day. Eight adults, including the grade level teachers, work with students during this time allowing for groups ranging from 3-14. Some groups are as small as three so children can get targeted, intense, daily intervention. We have groups working on reinforcing/extending skills in reading, writing, technology and math.

Groups were started in each grade this past week. Teams of teachers will meet again in 6-8 weeks to evaluate student progress and make changes to the groups as needed. WINN is a valuable block of time as it serves to meet the needs of all learners across the continuum of learning. Click here to access a parent presentation that speaks to this initiative in more detail.

See below for a listing of upcoming school events as well as more detailed information about our new specials and the Box Tops winners for September. Should you have any questions or concerns about anything in this newsletter, or any other aspect of your child’s RLS experience, please let us know. Do not hesitate to give us a call, to send an email or to stop by the office!

Picture of the Week

A huge shout out to Chief Rogowski and all of the members of the Barre Fire Department who visited RLS to celebrate Fire Prevention Week. Students in PK through Grade 2 were able to visit with the firemen and EMTs and explore the trucks! We learned a lot and had a great time!

STEM Class @ RLS

STEM is a pretty hot word these days, but do you know what it stands for or how important it really is? What is STEM? STEM is the future. STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and math. These are all areas of learning that our children need to be comfortable with to excel in the future. STEM makes creators, thinkers, problem solvers, doers, innovators, and inventors. Exposing kids to simple STEM ideas at an early age today sets a foundation for higher learning tomorrow.

Students in grades 3-6 have already met the challenge!  Using the Engineering Design Process students teamed up to imagine, plan, and create a prototype of a zip line container to safely & successfully carry materials along the zip line. Ask them about it!

The students and I are ready for several more engineering and design challenges throughout the school year, as well as the introduction and exposure to 3D printing, coding and more exciting STEM lessons.  The foundation for fostering early interest in STEM has begun in QRSD!

Art and World Cultures @ RLS

Welcome to the Art Room, Please have your Passports ready and we will begin our explorations shortly.

“K-6 Art” will bring the world to the students of Hubbardston Center School (T/F) and  Ruggles Lane School (M/W/Th) through experiences with Art and Culture. Looping projects from K/3 and 4/6 we plan to expand the knowledge base of students with a variety of perspectives of what/where/how Art is; and encourage them to express themselves through authentic exploration. The visual exemplars used will be opportunities for students to design in the “school” of global Art masters and begin to understand world events, why people might do the things they do, and time periods in context.

I would like to thank students and their adults for filling out the Art & World Culture – Who Am I survey. Students will use this personal information this year as they think about their own culture and culture traits as we explore other regions in the world. This worksheet will become part of their own portfolio and will be a reference source throughout the year.

Congratulations to our entire school community for our efforts to collect box tops in September. In total we collected 833 Box Tops! Congratulations and an extra recess goes to Ms. Hobson’s class for bringing in 249 boxtops! Ms. Capurso’s class was a close 2nd with 217! Both classes will earn an extra recess for their efforts. Our next collection date is October 20th. Which class will be the October winner?

Picture Day was a great success on Friday, October 13. Retakes will be Thursday, November 30th.

Walking Wednesdays

Those students and families who join us have a blast with our weekly Walking Wednesdays. If you would like to walk with us, meet us on the front lawn of the Barre Police Department for an 8:00 departure. Parents do not have to join us; we just ask that you check in with a staff member prior to leaving. When possible, an email will be sent out the night before if we need to cancel. Otherwise, look to Facebook, Instagram and/or email for cancellation notices in the morning.

This year QRSD will continue to run Fun Frontier, a before and after school program. Click here for their flyer and click here for their brochure. Should you need information, feel free to reach out to the director, Kari Sacramone, at ksacramone@qrsd.org.

As a reminder, our office hours will be 8:00-4:00. During these times, if we do not answer the phone, we are helping another family and ask that you leave us a voice mail. We can also be reached via email at RLS@qrsd.org.
